Let’s start with Eindhoven, the Dutch capital of design. Eindhoven hosts the Design Academy, a university fully dedicated to design. Moreover, every October in Eindhoven there is Design Week, attracting thousands and thousands of exhibitors, designers and design lovers. Once you will be in town don’t miss a visit to Van Abbe museum, with pieces of art by Picasso, Mirò and the Russian graphic El Lissitzky, and the Philips museum, to find out about the fascinating history of incandescence lamps. Getting to Eindhoven from Amsterdam by bus is easy and cheap.
Let’s move now to the most modern and trendiest Italian city: since years Milan is one of the Italian centers for design. The city hosts – to name a few – the International Triennale, where artists and designers are showing their artworks, and the Prada Foundation, a contemporary art museum. If you love architecture design don’t skip a visit to the Porta Garibaldi area, where you can admire modern skyscrapers, the futuristic Aulenti square and the beautiful “Bosco Verticale” (literally “Vertical Wood”), a couple of buildings where plants and trees are growing on walls. If you are in Milan on the first week of April you cannot miss the “Salone del Mobile”, the most important furniture and interior design fair in Italy and all the collateral events of FuoriSalone around the city. Located in the charming Basque Country, Bilbao is famous all over the world for hosting the Guggenheim Museum: the building itself deserves a visit, with its futuristic shape, and it hosts modern art exhibitions all year long. If you are a true design lover you will enjoy the sight of Calatrava bridge, planned by the world famous Spanish architecture Santiago Calatrava. Northern Europe is the true European design cradle, and Helsinki proves it. The Finnish metropolis, that has been nominated the 2012 design world capital, has an entire city district dedicated to industrial design, with dozens and dozens of furniture shops and many highlights: from the Design Forum Finland, hosting artworks made by Finnish designers, to Korkeavuorenkatu, the museum dedicated to the Fashion evolution. Berlin doesn’t need introductions: since decades this is the real European capital of design. The city was completely destroyed during World War Two and fully rebuilt: visit the new Central Station, a magnificent crystal building, admire the skyscrapers in Potsdamer Platz, the square designed by Renzo Piano, and the Jewish memorial, that has opened in 2005 for the 60th Holocaust anniversary. The Danish capital is a modern and futuristic city, where past and future live together. Enjoy a walk in the streets of Vesterbro, the neighborhood of boutiques and design shops; visit the Dansk Design Center, the New Opera House, a futuristic theater build on the seaboard, and, if you have money enough, stay at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, the first design hotel in the world. If you still have time, go to Charlottenlund, just an hour far from Copenhagen: here you could visit the house of the famous architect Finn Juhl and the wonderful and futuristic Ordrupgaard art museum. Let’s end our design bucket list with Turin: this lovable Italian city hosts one of the most excellent design school in Italy, the Design Center Politecnico. In October 2017 Turin will become “World Design Capital”, with many and many events dedicated to the design world.
